Northern powerhouse Pyncher deliver their latest single, The Eight Legged Band, in advance of their forthcoming EP of the same name – released November 20th. Accompanied by an amusingly bucolic video which sees our eight-legged heroes getting up close and personal with their four-legged friends, this is another splendidly atmospheric offering from one of the most exciting and imaginative bands on the circuit.

Despite constantly adding more tricks of the trade to their armoury, Pyncher like nothing more than to dabble in a little lo-fi experimentation, as singer Sam explains:

“A couple of years ago I started recording with more drum machines and weird synths. My friend Tasmin (TTSSFU) let me use her Casio that she got for cheap from a charity shop and it became a bit of inspiration for the project. I should probably give it back to her now.”

This approach, together with Alex Greaves’ sympathetic production, suits this haunting little ditty perfectly, complete with a lilting ‘La la la’ chorus that adds a Baltic whiff to proceedings and, to these ears at least, is improbably redolent of Blondie’s Rapture.

Lyrically, the track expands on themes of insecurity and doubt, both on a personal and universal level that will chime with regular Pyncher listeners. Sam again:

“The Eight Legged Band’ is about wanting to be someone different and being too afraid to take a leap of faith. There’s a relationship running through it, too, but ultimately, it’s about a wider existential anxiety around growing up, the things you leave unsaid, and whether you’re making the most of the time you’ve got.”

But notwithstanding the song’s gently melancholic mood and underlying sense of angst, it will, in typical Pyncher style, wheedle its way into your cranium, as you find yourself involuntarily humming ‘La la la, la la la la’ for the foreseeable future.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
