Debut single, It Leaks Out, heralds the arrival of alt/rock duo Weather Happy; a release that augurs well for the future.
With Weather Happy, her new collaboration with drummer Harry Carter, Holly Carter very much carries on where she left off with her band Berries, producing a typically intricate and hypnotic single in the shape of It Leaks Out. And if anyone thinks the ‘math rock’ reference often applied to Holly’s music implies something clinical and lacking emotion, nothing could be further from the truth. Her strikingly sonorous vocals intertwine with spiky guitar and empathetic drums, the changes of tempo and mood combining with the effectively sparse production to keep the listener engaged throughout.
Also in keeping with the Berries’ work, this is a song which addresses very human issues. As the duo explain, the song is ‘about masking and bottling up negative thoughts and feelings until they inevitably find a way out’, a sentiment reflected in the underlying tension evident throughout the track. Another trademark of Holly’s writing is the use of physical metaphors to represent human emotions, and this is no exception; ‘The enigmatic “corridors” featured in the song represent the journey and impression those feelings make on and around our bodies with the constant need and pressure to reassure everyone that everything is fine.’
Complex yet relatable, thought-provoking and energising, It Leaks Out is an inventive and atmospheric track that promises much for the autumn release of the duo’s debut EP.
