Ninajirachi and Porter Robinson connect on WannaCry, a bright, volatile electronic collaboration inspired by one of the internet era’s most notorious cyberattacks.
First previewed live at Coachella, the track has since surfaced across Primavera Sound, EDC Las Vegas, Project Glow, Dark Mofo and Ninajirachi’s Dark Crystal shows. Its release completes a personal loop for the Australian producer, whose first concert as a teenager was Porter Robinson at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre.
More than a decade later, the pair turn their shared history with computer music and online culture into something deliberately synthetic. WannaCry is written from the perspective of the 2017 ransomware virus, reframing malicious code through crystalline melodies, digital distortion and euphoric pop production.
Robinson’s widescreen electropop instincts sit naturally beside Ninajirachi’s sharper club architecture; moving between sweetness and threat, treating the computer not as a tool but as a character with its own language, memory, and destructive potential.
The collaboration lands mid-major run for Ninajirachi; debut album I Love My Computer earned three ARIA Awards, while her Dark Crystal live series has expanded into sold-out headlines and slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, All Points East, and Portola.
Robinson, meanwhile, continues the evolution that has taken him from the electro-house impact of Worlds through Nurture and into the pop-rock collision of SMILE! 😀.
WannaCry works because it avoids empty cyber nostalgia. It takes the anxiety, beauty and absurdity of growing up online and compresses them into a track that feels equally suited to a festival stage and a corrupted hard drive.
