Elsewhere, Million Ways injects some much-needed momentum into the middle stretch, its driving rhythm and soaring chorus providing one of the album’s most immediate hooks. Tidal Wave then washes over everything with layers of textured guitars and thumping drums, to give the record a real sense of urgency. The closing duo is where Seahaven save some of their best work, though. Wedding Bells, carries a sense of emotional clarity that cuts through the record’s hazier moments, before Companion provides a fitting send-off with it’s pulsating tones. Patient and reflective, it feels like the end of a long conversation with an…

A few years ago, at a local gig to see the Pennsylvania band The Stray Birds, the crowd was overall polite and receptive to the music; however, let us just say they needed to warm up. The band led by the wonderful Maya de Vitry launched into a version of Down In The Willow Garden. A traditional Appalachian murder ballad, also known as Rose Connelly. The crowd absolutely loved it, and band member Oliver Craven commented that at last they had found the audience’s level. Why are murder ballads so fascinating that onlookers will sit up and notice? Paul Slade…

Fun. It’s a word that crops up a lot. It’s a word the band – completed by lead guitarist Daniel Haniß, bassist Daniel Klossek, guitarist Pascal Schillo and, on this tour, Sum 41’s Frank Zummo behind the kit – really endeavour to bring to life onstage. They succeed. It’s not just a concert. It’s a spectacle. For almost two hours, they treat each song they play – and there are 20 of them – like its own mini universe. Each one has its own unique visual style thanks to incredibly detailed, all-consuming projections. There are costume changes, pyrotechnics, explosions of…

In a world where way too many bands outstay their welcome and plod on to diminishing returns, there is almost something romantic and beautiful about the untapped potential of a group who bow out early. In doing so they leave a legacy of the unknown, the unfulfilled or the criminally under-appreciated. Fans will pour over their work and speculate into the ether about that genre-defining third album that never was, or the festival headlining spot they could have obtained in the distance had fate not conspired against them. It’s time to give these artists their dues. This is 10 bands…
