The album wastes little time setting the tone, with Snoop Dogg joining Kurupt on opener “Sneak Attacc” and returning for “Me N The Boyz.” Elsewhere, the project finally gives an official release to “Mystic River,” a Kurupt and Battlecat collaboration that first surfaced almost 20 years ago, while Jane Handcock appears on “Special.”
One of the standout moments comes with “I Don’t Love Her,” featuring BJ The Chicago Kid, Soopafly and Akeem Ali, which flips New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love” into a smooth G funk cut. Butch Cassidy and RBX also make appearances across a record packed with familiar West Coast DNA.
Tales From The Hood isn’t about Kurupt and Battlecat attempting to recreate the past. Instead, it’s two veterans returning to a sound they helped build and showing why their chemistry still hits nearly 30 years later. Rooted firmly in West Coast culture but shaped by everything they have experienced since, the album feels like both a celebration of the G funk blueprint and another chapter from two of its most important figures.
