Mel Hudson’s Richard Ashcroft Revived My Libido is ostensibly a show about sex, but in reality it’s about something far more interesting: what happens when women reach midlife and take the opportunity to rediscover themselves.
Hudson speaks directly to women in their forties, fifties and sixties who may be wondering where their libido went, and whether they even want it back. With warmth and wit, she dismantles the idea that libido is simply about sex. Instead, she celebrates it as a life force – the spark that fuels creativity, curiosity, confidence and joie de vivre.
The show’s premise: a Richard Ashcroft concert becomes the catalyst for Hudson’s own reawakening. But this is not a tale of dramatic reinvention or post-divorce liberation. Rather, it’s a nuanced and relatable exploration of that curious stage of life without the demands of parenting and no longer part of a couple – for the first time in years, there’s space to ask what you really want.
Hudson’s storytelling is packed with sharply observed moments that have us laughing in recognition.
Her daughter, Ripley, is woven into the show and tolerates Mel’s oversharing with comical mock horror.
Having stepped away from comedy for many years, it’s a welcome return from the former Alan Partridge (Knowing Me, Knowing You), The Catherine Tate Show and Hudson & Pepperdine star.
Mel Hudson’s creative libido and lust for life are well and truly back. It’s a joyous show that should be available on prescription.
