London trio hazy waters return with high; a shoegaze-infused indie rock single wired around impulse, chemistry, and fleeting connection. Gritty guitars, neon synths, punk urgency, and a restless bassline push into brighter, more volatile territory. Nostalgic, but not stuck there.Built from instinct rather than polish, high began with a bassline and hypnotic guitar melody before opening into a full-throttle indie anthem: crisp enough to hit, rough enough to breathe. hazy waters are not trying to smooth the chaos out. They lean into it.At the band’s core is Agness and Aleks’ decade-long creative partnership, first formed as teenagers in Poland. That…
Skrillex releases SOMA, a 13-track album built around high-pressure club architecture, cross-border collaboration, and live-set energy pushed into studio form. Few cinematic universes have expanded as successfully beyond the big screen as Star Wars, and The Mandalorian and Grogu has opened up the world of Star Wars even more. What began as a groundbreaking Disney+ series quickly became a fan favourite, introducing audiences to the stoic bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable Force-sensitive companion, Grogu. Now, their adventures leap streaming to the biggest screen possible with The Mandalorian and Grogu in IMAX. The movie features larger-scale action, breathtaking visuals, and the emotional bond that made the series such a success. This latest chapter delivers a true Star…
When Does This Place Become Our Scene, the new album from Oslo-based trio Hammok, is the sound of musicians in lockdown, paying no mind to having to play these songs live at some point, but focusing instead on creating feral, interesting music in their own corner of the world, while, as the album’s title suggests, looking for connection with the wider community. There are positives and negatives from this way of working. The good thing is that Semi-Automatic Machines, BANG and Thirst possess the blistering urgency of a fire in a room with no doors. The downside, however, is that…
Guitar-based pop, done skilfully, with words reflecting life’s imperfections.Teddy Thompson, the son of British folk icons Richard and Linda Thompson, was born in the UK but now lives in Brooklyn. This is his tenth self-penned studio album, coming after Heartbreaker Please in 2020. Since then, he has done an album of classic country duets with Jenni Muldaur and his own album of country covers. However, Never Be The Same moves away from these, being guitar-based pop, or perhaps you could call it soft-rock. This is done well, with the tracks having good melodies and choruses. Thompson shows his talent as…
Resurrected English Skiffle band return to their roots with their first record in eight years.Skiffle, I hear you say, isn’t that Lonnie Whatsisname knocking out a homemade English rock and roll and singing about Gor’ Blimey Trousers? Why should I read this?So let’s start with a potted history. Skiffle, as a term, was first heard in the southern states of America in the early 20th Century and reflected a mix of blues and jazz played by jug bands on washboards, jugs, washtub bass, cigar box fiddle, and other homemade instruments. It was picked up as a term and used in…
Photo by Neilson HubbardIn March, we put out a request for short fiction written around the subject of americana. The first to answer our call was one of our favourite singer/songwriters, Dean Owens. He also appeared on our Podcast chatting with Keith Hargreaves recently. Listen to that here. While we don’t usually endorse Spotify as a platform, he has created a playlist there to go along with the story, which you can find here. The Motel And The Highway An original short story by Dean OwensJohnny left Jessica in the motel room and headed out onto Highway 395. Classic Clips: The Lost Gonzo Band with Jerry Jeff Walker and Gary P. Nunn London Homesick Blues – live from Texas Roadhouse, 1991
London Homesick Blues appears on Jerry Jeff Walker’s iconic 1973 live album, ¡Viva Terlingua!(1973). Recorded in Luckenbach, Texas, with The Lost Gonzo Band, the song was written and sung by band member Gary P. Nunn. It is famously known as being the theme song for the TV show Austin City Limits from 1977 to 2004. Nunn played piano in the famed Lost Gonzo Band of troubadour Jerry Jeff Walker. In this video clip, Nunn is offered centre stage by Walker to sing his signature song. The peculiarity is that the song became as indelibly associated with Walker as was Mr…
Greg Loftus comes from the town of Bourne, not far from the bridge that connects Massachusetts to Cape Cod. It is there that he practices woodworking, operates a club in nearby Falmouth and makes rock music with a rugged americana character. His songs don’t have a decided regional flavour, like neighbours Lori McKenna in Stoughton, Grace Morrison in Wareham or Dennis Brennan in Boston. “My old stuff that’s not really online does a little bit more,” Loftus notes. “I lived in Texas for seven years and been back probably seven years now. The songs that will be on the next…
