Credit: Eve AlpertWell that’s it from us for this week. If you’re an AUK supporter your new playlist will be with you at 5pm. We leave you dear reader with a new song from Nate Amos aka This is Lorelei which as you’ll hear isn’t really americana by even our own indie-twisting definition of it, but the video is just exceptionally good, as is the song itself once it worms its way into your head. Southern rock debut for Canadian five-piece.Hailing from Ontario, Canada, The Wild High are a five-piece built around singer-songwriter Jon Harvey (formerly of the band Monster Truck). Harvey describes the band as “a chosen family of musicians (who) collaborate from a place of love, joy and gratitude”. Their first album, Listen To The Wild High, is an independent release available through their Bandcamp page, and (deliberate choice) not currently on any streaming platform. The Wild High exist in a southern-rock/roots-rock kind of place, and if The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Drive-By Truckers are your cup of tea, then you’re likely…

A powerful message that’s relayed with the kind of vigour and skill needed to make people sit up and listen.“In his oval room, in his rockin’ chair / He’s the president, but I don’t care / He’s a business man, he got business ties / He got dollar signs in both his eyes,” Margo Price sings on Oval Room, a song it would be natural to assume was written by Price about current US president, and former reality TV star, Donald Trump, but in fact, it was originally penned by one of Price’s heroes, Blaze Foley, way back in 1984…

Cristina Jul photoAt once nostalgic travelogue, introspective head-trip, and rootsy showcase, Madrid-born Juana Everett’s second album should be her breakthrough record. Past Lives in California swims headfirst through the murky waters of transit, both literal and metaphysical. Bring Me Back skips like a stone across water, its robust rhythm yielding one of her best pure americana songs. Pinecrest looks more inward with snapshot lyrics about leaving Los Angeles to sit on the porch and listen to the rain. What A Swell Party finds her in Joshua Tree, “where I feel free / A pair of boots, a bikini and a…

U2 frontman Bono passes through the world with the ease of a man with enough money to do whatever the hell he likes, and enough clout and confidence to choose whomever he does it with. He’s a Zelig-like figure, as comfortable entertaining vast crowds as he is attending political summits with high-powered leaders. Put very simply, he finds himself in situations the rest of us never will, simply by dint of being Bono.Which explains why he was flying on Jimmy Buffett’s plane the day Jamaican police filled it with bullet holes. It’s January 1996. Bono has spent much of his time…
