N8NOFACE returns with the hard-as-nails and furiously catchy “Paranoid”, produced by Dave Sitek. N8 has long admired Sitek’s work with TV On the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Weezer and Chelsea Wolfe among others. When N8, a longtime DIY artist, first stepped into Dave’s Federal Prism Studio, he was nervous, but as the synth-punk songs they worked on took shape the collaboration started to feel natural. The first taste of their work together, “Paranoid”, is out now.
Growing up near the Sonoran border, N8 lived in a world surrounded by hustlers, incarcerated friends, and a family who suffered alcoholism. N8 himself spent seventeen years battling addiction, fearing that sobriety might rob him of the very thing that made him an artist. Now on the other side of that battle and having relocated to Long Beach, N8 sometimes struggles to reconcile his past and present selves.
People might see N8 with Travis Barker or Eyedress, and not know that he comes from the streets of “jackboys, dudes kicking indoors and robbing people”. On “Paranoid”, N8 shows how these two worlds collide: with every new achievement, he grows a little more paranoid.
He says: “Me still being on the blue line, on the train, and in the neighborhoods around LA, you always have in the back of your mind that someone thinks you’re way more paid or popular than you really are.” He adds, “you got to watch your back and just make sure that no one thinks you’re a lick. It’s just where I come from and what’s embedded in my DNA.”
