MOULD are continuing their rise through the UK’s underground scene with the release of ferocious new single ‘Lucid’, the latest track to be lifted from their upcoming debut album ‘Hoping As A Coping Mechanism’.
Premiered by Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 6 Music, the track sees the Bristol trio pushing further into heavier territory, combining wiry post-punk tension with massive hooks and the kind of raw energy that’s made them one of the UK’s most talked-about new live bands.
Set for release on July 10 via 5dB Records, ‘Hoping As A Coping Mechanism’ was written across fragmented moments back home in Bristol before being recorded at London’s 5dB Studios with producer Sean Oakley, whose previous work includes collaborations with Georgia, Scaler and Sorry.
While the band describe the album as “more focused, paced and thought-out”, it still sounds driven by the chaos and unpredictability that’s become central to MOULD’s identity. Across 13 tracks, the record dives headfirst into anxiety, frustration and the exhausting noise of modern life, while still carrying the urgency of a band built for sweaty rooms and packed-out venues.
New single ‘Lucid’ might be one of the clearest examples of that balance yet. Built around jagged riffs and pounding rhythms, the track swings between aggression and melody without losing momentum for a second. It follows previous singles ‘Float’, ‘Falling Posture’ and ‘Lists’, all of which landed strong support from BBC 6 Music.
Speaking about the track, vocalist and guitarist Joe Sherrin said: “Suppressing what we want to do or say, the last line is ‘there’s more to life than stability’, which is basically telling the voice in the rest of the song that life’s too short for worrying.”
Alongside the album release, MOULD have also announced a UK headline tour for October, while continuing to build momentum with support from publications including NME, DIY, Dork and Rolling Stone UK.
The band are also due to appear at Download Festival next month ahead of a run of in-store performances celebrating the album’s release.
At a time when post-punk is overcrowded with copycats, MOULD feel like one of the few bands actually pushing the genre somewhere exciting.
