Following the success of their first album in 16 years Renascent, The Durutti Column have kindly let Kieran Hebden from Fourtet loose on one of their tracks, a sublime remix of the highest standards in anticipation of the live date looming in a few weeks. Read on…

“Your Shadow at Morning”fromThe Durutti Column’slatest albumRenascenthas received a beautifully understated rework byKieran HebdenofFour Tet.Hebdenbuilds upon the song’s stately, wistful mood, inviting in crisp electronic flourishes and hazy synth textures to sit alongsideVini Reilly’ssignature guitar washes.

“It’s only in the last couple of years that I learnt about the Durutti Column and explored their wonderful catalogue,”explainsHebden.“It’s had a big impact on me so I was thrilled when a new album was announced and then when I was asked to do a remix it felt like the universe was confirming I was connected to this music.”

Hebden’snew version floats somewhere between ambient electronica, modern classical and minimal IDM, a nine-minute meditation that enhances the reflective grace of the original while opening it up further to contemporary electronic audiences.

Renascenthas marked a remarkable new chapter forThe Durutti Column, the Manchester trio comprising cornerstone guitarist and vocalistVini Reilly, drummer and managerBruce Mitchelland producer and multi-instrumentalistKeir Stewart. Their first new studio album in more than 16 years has been hailed as a late-career triumph, reaffirming the band’s singular place in British music.

Thealbumhasreceivedwidespreadcriticalacclaim, with glowing reviews and coverage from the likes ofPitchfork,FLOODandPASTEhere in the U.S., as well asThe Guardian,The Observer,The Sunday Times,The Quietus,Classic Pop,MOJOandUncutat home in the UK, France’sLe Monde,Télérama,Libération,Les Inrocks, Spain’sEl País,Australia’sSydney Morning Herald,The Age, Louder Than War and many more.

Renascent, the album’s title (meaning to be reborn or to spring up afresh), captures not only Reilly’s personal and creative journey, but also a wider rediscovery ofThe Durutti Column’smusic. The band’s influence continues to resonate with new audiences, with renewed attention placing their distinctive catalogue in a contemporary cultural context, with a legion of new fans includingBlood Orange,Harry Styles,Caroline Polachek,The Avalanches,Yung LeanandMark William Lewis.

Originally emerging from Manchester’s post-punk scene and closely associated with the pioneeringFactory Records, across six decadesThe Durutti Columndeveloped a sound that resisted convention, bringing together classical guitar, ambient minimalism, jazz, electronic experimentation and fragile romanticism.Renascentdemonstrates that this restless spirit remains intact, withReillycontinuing to explore new musical territory rather than simply revisiting the past.

In June this yearHarry StylesinvitedThe Durutti Columnto join him at his iteration ofSouthbank’s Meltdown Festival. While Vini’s ongoing health conditions meant he was unable to join, musical directorKeir Stewartand drummerBruce Mitchellassembled a unique group of musicians to celebrate the band’s extraordinary catalogue.

This November,The Durutti Column’smusic returns home to Manchester for a special one-night-only performance atAlbert Hall on Thursday November 19. EntitledFor Vini: The Music,Stewart(guitar, bass, samples and keyboards) andMitchell(drums and percussion) will once again be joined by a cast of close collaborators includingCaoilfhionn Rose(vocals, piano),Liz Rossi(violin) andSam Morris(French horn, piano). We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
