Nigerian Scottish R&B artist LOLA! is quickly carving out a space for herself with a sound built around infectious rhythms and a distinct sense of identity. Her debut single, ‘what did you expect’, recently earned its first radio play on BBC Radio Scotland’s BBC Introducing, marking an exciting first step for the emerging artist. With a support slot for multi-platinum soul artist Kenny Thomas at Edinburgh’s La Belle Angele on 29th August, followed by an appearance at PITCH Scotland, an international celebration of hip hop and underground culture, LOLA! is already making her presence known beyond her debut release. As she continues work on her debut EP, supported by the Youth Music NextGen grant and set for release in Spring 2027, ‘what did you expect’ offers an early glimpse into an artist with plenty more to say.

The song has a infectious and energetic sound, but there is also a strong message behind the song. It focuses on toxic masculinity and the way some men can expect women to put up with their behaviour without speaking up or standing up for themselves. The lyrics show the frustration of being treated badly and feeling like you are expected to just accept it. As the song progresses, the woman starts to take back control and realise that she does not have to stay in a relationship where she is not respected. This makes the song feel quite empowering, as it follows her journey from feeling trapped and frustrated to finally gaining her confidence and independence. The upbeat production and strong vocals also add to this feeling, making the moment where she leaves feel even more powerful and satisfying. Overall, the song combines a fun, catchy sound with an important message about recognising toxic behaviour, setting boundaries and choosing yourself.

Overall, LOLA! blends a bouncy melody with a meaningful lesson about self-respect, confidence and recognising unhealthy relationships. ‘what did you expect’ shows her ability to turn an important issue into an engaging and empowering song. With her upcoming performances and debut EP, LOLA! is an artist with strong potential for the future.
