Slam Dunk hurtles round the corner faster every year, but that’s not such a bad thing when the line-ups remain so exciting. The twin-site festival is having a celebration as loud and joyful as it deserves for its 20th anniversary this weekend, uniting the best and brightest of punk, emo, metal and hardcore. What’s especially interesting about this year’s bill is that Slam Dunk is devoting a pair of stages to some of the heaviest acts it’s ever hosted. Main Stage East Left and Main Stage East Right offer a great day in themselves, kicking off with a thunderous one-two…
Credit: Pat JohnsonPeter Case, one of the master songwriters, has enjoyed a fifty-year recording career and has been writing songs for even longer. He was born in Buffalo, New York, but his recording career has been centred on the West Coast and encompasses punk rock, new wave, acoustic rock and contemporary folk, though his songwriting has always been at the heart of what he does. His first recording band was The Nerves, which he formed in 1974 with Jack Lee and Paul Collins in 1976. They were influential in the emerging punk and new wave scenes in San Francisco and…
Photo: Danny ClinchGot back from hols last week and then fail to hit my deadline a week later. Unforgivable… but I do have an excuse. Flimsy one, I grant you, but an excuse nonetheless, and a glorious thing it was. Let me enlighten you.Forty years ago, in 1986, I was a callow youth and just about to leave Drama School, believing that I was the best actor of my generation (this is actually factually correct and it’s just not been validated by fame or indeed fortune) with the world at my feet. For much of the time, in between learning…
Psychedelic and spiritual adventures, wild parties, tragedies, and a surreal trip into the unknown – the inside story of the Magical Mystery Tour
Originally published in Uncut, November 2017. THE invitations, remembers one guest, were printed in blue, red and purple psychedelic designs. In keeping with the switched-on spirit of the times, the party they described was to be fancy dress. Accordingly, the soirée at the newly opened Westbourne Suite at the Royal Lancaster Hotel was a grand affair. The 200 guests enjoyed an extravagant buffet, drinks and splendid views across London’s Hyde Park. It was December 21, 1967. The occasion was The Beatles’ fabled Christmas Party – an annual event hosted for friends, family and an ever-expanding entourage. John Lennon came as…
When Emmylou Harris made her UK debut at London’s New Victoria Theatre in November 1975, she was barely a year into a solo career precipitated by tragic circumstance. In September 1973, her mentor and singing partner Gram Parsons fatally overdosed in a desert motel room, before the release of Grievous Angel, their second album together. At a time when she and Parsons should have been taking their music to even greater heights, she found herself a guardian of Gram’s legacy – even as she made the new musical life for herself she has lived now for over 50 years, during which…

A demonstration of what each artist’s arsenal is bursting with as distinctly split release, yet a collaborative concentration of overlapping histories, everything is eaten and flattened as techno is stretched on a splintered rack. By Ryan-Lewis Walker. It’s difficult to quantify what happens when JK FLESH (Justin Broadrick – Godflesh, Jesu, Final, Techno Animal) and MONRELLA (Mick Harris – Scorn, Lull, Painkiller, Napalm Death) release an album together. The various…

Alongside the album, Saleh has also shared a new video for standout track “Firestorm,” a tender coastal love song written in the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires. Featuring the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles and production from Justin Vernon alongside Billy Lemos, Ethan Hansen and Jeremy Nutzman, the track captures a fleeting sense of beauty and intimacy born from collective trauma.Speaking on the song, Saleh described “Firestorm” as a reflection on the contrast between LA’s obsession with glamour and the devastation communities faced as fires swept through the city in early 2025.Dua Saleh will take Of Earth & Wires…

Sig And The Fire Pilots deliver a swaggering slice of classic-inspired alternative rock with “LITTLE BLACK DRESS”. This powerful new cut reminds me of those fiery songs that you’d hear all over the radio in the 1990s…. a90s-leaning rock anthem with swagger, grit and undeniable live energy.Based out of Cannock in England, the band have fused together punchy rhythms and deep, rock-ready vocals with a nostalgic undertone that can easily bring in fans of the rock scene from the 1990s all the way to the modern day. The song is written about that very famous ‘Little Black Dress’ – Coco…
Annika Bellamy’s “Palm Tree” is a breezy, feel-good blend of power pop, surf rock, reggae and alt-country. Based out of Long Beach, California, this song, right from the get-go, sounds like the kind of track that you’ll hear all summer long in cafés up and down the coast…. asun-soaked, genre-blending summer anthem built on hooks, warmth and effortless charm. The feel-good sound is no doubt a reason why we got into this from the get-go. With the song unfolding, a few of its sub-genres are evident well before the first minute has even come and gone.Released during her Japan-Philippines tour on…
