Leicester, England trio Boilermen make a fearless debut with “A 1000 Words on Sound”. It’s quite a raw and punky offering, with tracks that range from 48 seconds to 8 minutes. Among the 13 tracks, you have some delightful cuts, such as the opening track “Curious Thing”, which reminds me of those classic punk bands from London in the ’70s and ’80s.

Another key track on the release is “Fogging”, the second track on the release. Now, to me, this sounds a bit more ’90s and also has more of a radio appeal. If you’re not someone who likes their punk-leaning rock music, then this is a great gateway song into their sound and also what this album is all about.

I also liked the raw and demo kind of feel of the eighth track, “Talkbook”. It gave me memories of walking around the music scene in London, heading into basements to check out some obscure punk bands and rock bands and stumbling upon gems along the way. This reminds me of that era of my life when I was in my late teens, early twenties, discovering music. It’s a great nostalgic trip for me.

The track “Situation Perfect” is also a solid cut from the LP and is a future cornerstone to their live shows if you ask me. It takes away the frantic and raw energy and injects a bit more of a laid-back punk feel. Hopefully, it gives the guys a bit of a moment to breathe so they can unleash the chaos further down the line.

Overall, I’d say this release is a solid listen for anyone who’s wanting to get into that punk rock sound without it feeling like you’re being too alienated. With the aforementioned tracks, I feel like you have got plenty of chances to get into their sound.

    Out of 10: 8/10

… araw, nostalgic punk debut that balances chaos, melody and accessibility.
