Long before Bria Cheri’s name appeared on a nominee list for the Josie Music Awards, it belonged to a three-year-old at a piano bench in South Jamaica, Queens, picking out notes her mother had just shown her. That early, unglamorous beginning is the part of the story awards press releases rarely get to — the part where an artist is built, one afternoon at a time, long before anyone outside the family is watching.
Cheri has spent more than a decade since then perfecting a sound that resists easy shorthand: soul in its bones, R&B in its phrasing, a jazz singer’s patience with a lyric. She describes herself as quiet by nature, someone who found her voice — literally and otherwise — through the discipline of the work rather than a need for the spotlight. It shows in the music. That approach first reached listeners fully formed on her debut EP, Before the Music, and continued two years later with Silent Siren, Vol. 1, a six-track release that paired her with producer and collaborator Donnie Klang. Tracks like “Rendezvous,” “Day Glow,” and a duet with Breeze Oliver, “Who Are You?,” showed an artist comfortable moving between smoky torch balladry and warmer, groove-driven R&B — a range she has continued to develop in the years since, alongside her work as a dancer and her ambitions as an actress.
That range is precisely what earned Cheri her latest recognition: an official nomination for Vocalist of the Year – R&B/Soul at the 12th Annual Josie Music Awards, set for September 20 at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. It is a category judged on the fundamentals — tone, technique, the kind of connection with a listener that can’t be coached — and it places her among a small, closely watched group of independent artists at one of the largest independent music awards shows in the world.
For Cheri, the nomination reads less like an arrival than a confirmation of the long game she has been playing all along. “This nomination is an incredible honor,” she said. “To be recognized by the Josie Music Awards alongside so many talented independent artists is truly humbling. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported my journey and believed in my music.”
What separates Cheri from the wider nominee field isn’t a viral single or a shortcut story — it’s the accumulation. A childhood at the piano. A first EP. A second project built on real collaboration. Years spent as a dancer sharpening the same instincts for timing and feeling that show up in her vocal phrasing. By the time her name reaches a ballot in Nashville, it has already been earned in rehearsal rooms and recording booths for more than a decade.
The Grand Ole Opry House stage in September will be the most visible platform Bria Cheri has stood on yet. Anyone who has followed her from Silent Siren forward already knows: she has been rehearsing for this moment her entire life.
